Past Habits I’ve Outgrown

There were many habits I developed when I was growing up. Now that I have established new habits, I no longer exhibit my childish behaviors.

As I go along, I will explain further.

This in no way suggests I am advocating my beliefs. That is a sacred path that we choose for ourselves. So, I totally respect your views, and I kindly ask you to respect mine.

My new habits can center on my religious beliefs OR principles I have grown into as I progress in life.

Living in a different society, as I do now, from the one I grew up in, has many varied lifestyles and traditions.

The first practice that comes to mind from the past was my eating and drinking habits.

My overall diet, which focuses more on my eating disciplines, will be discussed further in another blog post, as I now partake of a plant-based, alkaline diet.

What I once ate and drank is so far removed that it's like ancient history.

However, I will center on my drinking habits that no longer serve me.

Drinking alcoholic beverages was a pastime I once enjoyed when I lived life as a lost soul.

Sadly, some of my close friends that I used to 'drink with' have since passed on.

I do not know if our drinking days contributed to, or had a part to play in their passing. We would like to think differently. We were tempting fate, for we were putting ourselves in danger.

Alcohol and sugar in our diets can cause illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke as we age.

Although we would like to age gracefully.

I, myself, have suffered two strokes. As of now, I have paralysis of my right hand and right foot, and I move about in a wheelchair.

I did not know at the time we were drinking that I was a heavy drinker. In reflection, now we are older and, hopefully, wiser! If one has a big appetite, one should practice moderation.

But I can honestly tell you that our drinking was not for the faint of heart. The quantities we drank would have required considerable serious parental guidance to have scared us into thinking otherwise.

What we know now would have served us. It would have scared the living daylights out of us.

I am not proud of those days. Looking back, I feel absolutely foolish and ashamed of myself.

Many a time, I failed my dear, loving father, who would ask me not to do things that would embarrass him. Oh, Dad, I am so very sorry.

Youthful life needs so much guidance, nurturing, and instruction. That is why our parents and teachers put their necks out to 'school' us.

We so appreciate our mothers, fathers, guardians, and teachers now as we learn from our mistakes. However, if we had heeded their advice, we could have led a more charmed life.

Sugar cravings often accompany our drinking and eating habits. Most of everything sweet can be detrimental to our health, given what we know now about sugar and sweeteners.

So, sugar and sugary products I have eliminated from my diet. This is a major contribution to diabetes!

My younger days have been a period of unfortunate dietary habits. When I did learn more about diet and its consequences, I questioned our choices growing up.

But there is hope if we reverse or change our eating and drinking habits. The thing is, we have become so conditioned that our minds must undergo sweeping changes to remedy the situation.

The next area I would like to discuss is our language. And I am not talking about obscene language itself. I am referring to what we focus on all day long.

Our constant thinking and speaking affect our outward behavior.

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he" is found in Proverbs 23:7.

This verse emphasizes that our inner thoughts shape our attitude and actions, our true nature.

By focusing on certain thoughts, we tend to cultivate corresponding qualities and conduct, ultimately shaping our character.

"I think, therefore I am," which emphasizes the role of consciousness and thought in establishing existence.

Our choice of words affects how positive we are. We can go through life as conquerors. Stand up to issues by overcoming them. We can, therefore, choose whether we want to be winners in life's battles.

So, positive thinking can make life more enjoyable if we desire it to be so.

These are a few habits that can be cultivated into more beneficial ones for our health and well-being.
